Tree Identification
The following Southern Wyoming and Northern Colorado species are susceptible to beetle damage. Other susceptible species include White Pine, Whitebark Pine, Pinyon Pine, Bristlecone Pine, and Scotch Pine. Note that Aspens are not susceptible to Mountain Pine Beetles.
Beetle-Susceptible Tree Species
Blue Spruce : sharp single needles, longer cone up to 6 inches, bluish tint to tree
Douglas Fir : needles are soft and flat (easy test… grab a fistful of needles), unusual cone- forked, snake-tongue-like bracts extending from each scale.
Engelmann Spruce : sharp single needles, reddish flaky bark, oval shaped cone
Ponderosa Pine- (featured left) three long needles per bunch, thick reddish yellow bark, large cones
Limber Pine : as many as five needles per bunch, cones may have banana shape, white/gray bark
Lodgepole Pine : two short needles per bunch, small round cones often stay on branches

Immature Trees
Beetles do not normally attack immature trees with a diameter of less than 4 inches. Unless an immature tree is of high personal value, it should not be marked for spraying.
